About This Course

Carpenters make up one of the largest groups of skilled workers in the nation’s labor force. They work on the construction of buildings, using assorted materials such as metal, wood, stone, brick, glass, and/or concrete. Graduates of the program will obtain the basic skills of carpentry, masonry, and a variety of activities associated with building construction, such as cost estimating, cutting, fitting, fastening, and finishing various materials. Students will use a variety of hand-powered tools, learn print reading, follow technical specifications, and acquire knowledge concerning the physical properties of materials.

With the broad range of skills taught in Carpentry, a well-trained and motivated construction trades worker is qualified to be self-employed or to find employment in the construction, remodeling or repair of apartments, houses, condominiums, offices, schools, and public buildings. About one out of four skilled construction workers is self-employed and contracts with homeowners and businesses for small jobs.

Have a solid background in general mathematics & measurements
Be able to follow directions
Have an average aptitude in numerical ability, abstract reasoning, mechanical reasoning, and spatial relations.
Have an “eye” for straight lines and proportions
Work quickly, accurately, and economically

And physically, should:

Have physical stamina to endure stooping, lifting, and handling heavy loads
Have coordination of eyes, hands, and feet

Who is Mr. Douglas?: Mr. Dan Douglas has been the Carpentry Instructor at Crawford Tech since January 2022. Before his career in teaching, Mr. Douglas spent over 20 years in the carpentry field. He has been a self-employed contractor since 2007, and still runs his business when not in school.

Favorite Part of Teaching: Mr. Douglas’ favorite part of teaching is being able to share all of his gained experience and knowledge with students.

Outside of School: When Mr. Douglas is not teaching, he enjoys spending time with his family, watching football, and staying busy with woodworking and home improvement projects.

Crawford Tech will be operating on a two-hour delay on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.
