Why did you initially decide to apply for Cosmetology?
I initially decided to apply to tech after a tour with my school in 9th grade. I loved going into the different classrooms/programs and just seeing what they do every day there. Each program was so different!
What was your motivation to attend?
My motivation to attend would be seeing those kids working with their hands and physically looking at what they had built or made at the school every day.
What experiences do you remember most from your time at Crawford Tech?
There were so many fantastic experiences from tech. I honestly can say I loved every part of it! Going to tech definitely gave me a feeling of independence. For me that feeling you get when you actually understand something that you enjoy learning about was so special. Wanting to come back to school every day to learn was a good feeling. I also knew how special it was to be able to learn a trade that not everyone else can do and truly loving what you do.
Can you talk about your instructor and how they had an impact on your career path?
My instructor was Ms. Kristen Deets. I could not have asked for a better teacher! Anyone could see she really wanted each and every one of her students to do their best, not just in school and the classroom; but she wanted the best for us in life. She pushed us each day to learn something new. I think we all left the cosmetology program way better off than when we came into it. We did not just learn how to be cosmetologists, we learned so much more. She taught us respect, organization, communication, and independence. Ms. Deets prepared me for the future more than anyone else in my life.
What was your education and career path following graduation?
After graduation I worked at Chelby’s Hair Garage in Townville for about 6 months. I learned the ins and outs of salon life, which I loved. I then realized that my dream was to open my own salon. I knew how much I loved doing hair, and then found out that I also really enjoyed the business end of it as well. I jumped on that dream and now own my own salon.
Tell us a bit about what you are doing in your career now?
I currently own a salon The Hair Haven by Faith Ann. It’s located on Main Street in Titusville. I have been open since January 2019. I absolutely love owning my own salon, I believe it is my dream job! Sure, there are difficult days, but it is always worth it. I currently have one stylist working under me, who also graduated from The Crawford County Career and Technical Center in 2022.
If you could share a piece of advice to students who are considering applying to tech, what would it be?
If I had any advice to students considering applying to tech, I would tell them to just do it! If there was a program that stood out to you, apply! If you love working with your hands and learning hands on skills, apply! The most important piece of advice is no matter what program you decide, just give it your best and learn as much as you can. The Tech has amazing teachers that are willing to do anything to help you and your education. Take advantage of that and learn as much as you can from them, you would be very surprised at how much they prepare you for your life.
